A Innovative Partnership
Due to a combined effort between the City of Mitcham, Urrbrae Agricultural High School, the Patawalonga Catchment Water Management Board and the Friends of the Urrbrae Wetlands, the Urrbrae Wetland is a fully functioning wetland, working in the heart of the suburb of Mitcham. It aims to recreate the terrain, flora and fauna of the area prior to European settlement, in 1836. Native flora and fauna have been reintroduced through carefully managed, environmentally sensitive programs.
The decision to use the Urrbrae Wetland as an educational facility came as a result of the "Deed Of Gift" in the will of the late Peter Waite. Mr. Waite was a philanthropic, very successful farmer and business man, who returned his farm and to the state as long as it had an educational function.
The Urrbrae Wetland plays a major role as an educational tool for Urrbrae Agricultural High School, local primary and high schools, Urrbrae TAFE, the Waite Campus of the Adelaide University and for the wider community.
Partnership with the Nature Education Centre
The Urrbrae Wetland offers a unique opportunity for teachers, students and other interested people to experience a range of authentic and engaging learning activities. The learning centre has a wide range of equipment and learning resources which can be utilised and developed to suit every age in any learning area. The Urrbrae
Wetland Learning Centre also has an excellent partnership with the Nature Education Centre. So why not make a day of it and incorporate a visit to the Urrbrae Wetlands, then visit the Nature Education Centre to see the animals they have, experience handling them and learn about their habitats, food and care
that they need.
